Biography
Born Das Ratna Tuladhar, Dhammalok became a monk and worked to promote Theravada Buddhism and writing in Nepal Bhasa in Kathmandu. In 1944, along with seven other monks, he was expelled from Nepal by the ruling Rana regime for refusing to stop these activities. In exile, the monks founded Dharmodaya Sabha in Sarnath, India, in 1944, which went on to publish the magazine Dharmodaya. After the expulsion order was withdrawn in 1946, Dhammalok returned to Nepal; from 1947, a retreat he had built on the northern slope of Swayambhu hill became Ananda Kuti Vihar, a center of Theravada Buddhism in Nepal.
