About

Dharmodaya was launched from Kalimpong, India, in October 1947 on behalf of Dharmodaya Sabha — an organization founded in 1944 in Sarnath, India, by Buddhist monks who had been expelled from Nepal for promoting Buddhism and writing in Nepal Bhasa. The magazine was published by Maniharsha Jyoti Kansakar, with monks Aniruddha Mahathera and Mahanam Kobid as its first editors, and had a significant effect on standardizing written Nepal Bhasa. Publication moved to Kolkata from 1949 to 1960; the original run ceased in 1959. The magazine was later relaunched from Kalimpong in 1977 under a different editor and publisher, on behalf of the Kalimpong chapter of Dharmodaya Sabha.
