Lumbini is widely recognized as the traditional birthplace of Gautama Buddha and is one of the most significant pilgrimage destinations in Buddhism. The site includes the Maya Devi Temple and surrounding monastic zone, and draws visitors and pilgrims from many Buddhist traditions and countries. Significance

History
The Maya Devi Temple, the site's central shrine, is generally dated to around the 3rd century BCE, built during the reign of Emperor Ashoka; archaeological work has found evidence of earlier structures beneath it. Lumbini was inscribed as a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 1997.
