About

Sikh tradition in Nepal is often linked to Guru Nanak's own visit to the Kathmandu Valley in the early 1500s. This is tied to a site now called Nanak Math. A small Sikh community, including families with roots in Punjab, keeps gurdwaras (Sikh places of worship) running in Kathmandu and elsewhere. This page will grow with more detail on the community's history, once we have checked facts to add.

Beliefs

Sikh belief centers on one God, the equality of all people, and rejecting caste and idol worship. Sikh teaching stresses devotion and remembering God (called naam simran), honest living, and serving others (seva). The Guru Granth Sahib is Sikhism's main scripture. Sikhs treat it as their living Guru, following a line of ten human Gurus before it.

Teachings

Sikh teaching is passed down through the Guru Granth Sahib — a scripture made up of writings from the Sikh Gurus and other spiritual figures. It is also passed down through group worship, devotional singing (kirtan) at the gurdwara, and community service. This includes the shared meal called langar, which is open to everyone, no matter their background.
